WHO WE ARE
Hi, I'm Courtney
I'm the primary practitioner of FormFocus Osteopathy and Massage located in Pimpama. I'm a fully registered Osteopath with a passion for improving everyday health and wellbeing.
I take a holistic approach to health and therefore will often include lifestyle, sleep and ergonomic advice, as well as exercise prescription into my osteopathic treatment plans to help people make the changes in their lives that are going to help sustain their physical wellbeing and achieve their health goals.
Treatments
Osteopathy
We start by going through a detailed medical historyur current state of health, history and information about what you have come in to have treated. You can also ask me questions about osteopathy and types of techniques and tell me about your treatment goals.
Then we may proceed to a standard physical examination that can include any necessary neurological or orthopaedic tests that will help develop a working diagnosis on which treatment is based. Once the diagnosis is made, we'll discuss treatment plans.
Plans vary depending on diagnosis and goals. Yours may include: various manual treatment techniques; recommended lifestyle, sleep or ergonomic adjustments; prescription exercises and/or stretches; after-care information, and/or referral for imaging or to other practitioners that have the professional skills that you require to get the best results.
I will only recommend manual techniques that are deemed to be safe and effective for the diagnosis and your treatment specifically but if you would prefer not to use certain techniques then just let me know and we can discuss alternatives. Once we've developed a treatment plan that you're comfortable with, it's time to begin!
Remedial Massage
Remedial Massage involves the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal dysfunctions related to pain and restricted range of movement(ROM). A thorough assessment includes questions about your health history along with observations, ROM testing and palpatory findings to ensure that I have the information that I need to develop a working diagnosis. A working diagnosis identifies the dysfunction to be treated so that the appropriate techniques and advice can be incorporated into your treatment.
Treatment may include techniques such as:
Soft Tissue and IASTM
Trigger Point Therapy
Myofascial Release
Muscle Energy Techniques
Passive Stretching
Joint Mobilisation and Articulation
Neuromuscular Release
Positional Release
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Fascilitation
Remedial massage can help restore healthy muscle tone, promote tissue and joint mobility and reduce pain and dysfunction.
Relaxation Massage
Just need some time away?
A relaxation massage can be the perfect way to make some time-out and reconnect with your mind and body.
With this in mind, I've crafted a flowing, swedish-style massage routine that incorporates some deeply relaxing hot stone techniques within a warm, welcoming and hopefully comfortable atmosphere. I encourage people to use the time to practice conscious relaxation, whether that's using progressive muscle relaxation or focus on the breath as a way of enhancing the experience. There will be soft music playing when you arrive and a warm heat pack ready for application.
The Relaxation Massage 30 Minute Appointment includes coverage of the head, neck, shoulders and/or back.
The Relaxation Massage 60 Minute Appointment includes the whole body from head to toe.
This is a great gift for you to give yourself or someone special to you.

About

What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy was first founded in 1874 by Dr Andrew Still. It was built on the fundamental understanding that the body has it's own innate mechanisms which sustain health and the aim of treatment was always to identify and treat the primary cause of dysfunction. While the logic of this approach seems obvious now, at the time and in the region where Dr Still conducted his work as a medical practitioner this understanding seemingly eluded other practitioners who were more and more frequently medicating patients to simply relieve symptoms.
In Australia today, Osteopathy is a non-invasive manual therapy and Osteopaths are nationally registered allied health professionals with university qualifications from the Royal Melbourne Institure of Technology (RMIT), Victoria University (VU) or Southern Cross University (SCU). Many osteopaths still take a holistic approach to helping patients achieve better health and treat a variety of acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions.

The kind of Osteopath I am
All practitioners use different techniques and employ different skill sets to help patients achieve their health and wellness goals.
I'm what's known as a 'structural' osteopathic practitioner. This means that I focus on the muscles, bones, joints and nerves of the body and work to identify which tissues are responsible for your pain/dysfunction. I can work this out by taking a detailed history, asking relevant questions and using the appropriate neural and orthopaedic tests. All of this information helps me develop a working diagnosis that I base treatment on. I like to include 3 elements where possible in every treatment plan:
1) Manual Techniques
2) Patient Education
3) Prescription Exercise
All of these elements are important to include in treatment because they all play a vital role in assisting the body to return to a functional, pain-free state.

Manual techniques that I use
Osteopaths have many different manual techniques that we use to interact with the body's soft tissues, joints and nervous system. The type of technique that we decide to use depends on the type of tissue that we want to effect and the type of effect we want to encourage. A list of techniques that I use and may be recommended in your treatment include:
Soft Tissue Technique
Myofascial Release
Muscle Inhibition
Strain Counter-Strain
Muscle Energy Technique
Positional Release Technique
Passive Stretching
Balanced Ligamentous Tension
Mobilisation and Articulation
Low Velocity Low Amplitide Thrust
High Velocity Low Amplitude Thrust (also known as a joint 'adjustment' or 'manipulation')
Intra-oral techniques
Supportive and Sports Taping

What to expect in your first visit
When you come in as a new patient for an Osteopathic treatment I recommend arriving 10 minutes early so that you can fill out the initial paperwork and this doesn't take time out of your scheduled appointment time. There is on-street parking available and when you arrive you can come straight in and fill out your paperwork. When you're ready, I'll then bring you through into the treatment room and we'll go through your paperwork together and fill in any remaining blanks and you can ask any questions that you have about osteopathy and your treatment.
The same 10 minute early arrival is recommended for new patients who have scheduled Remedial or Relaxation Massage appointments although there is less initial paperwork for these treatments.

How to make the most of your extras
Yes I have a HICAPS machine in use!
This means if you have extras cover you can swipe your health fund card or use the electronic tap linked to your private health fund on your phone and your fund will pay the portion they cover on the spot. This way you only have to pay the remaining gap.
Please keep in mind that Medicare is not a private health fund.
If you want to know if you are covered for Osteopathy and/or Remedial Massage services under your health fund policy, I recommend that you contact your private health fund directly to check your level of coverage before your appointment.

Common Questions
Do I need to arrive early for my first appointment?
Yes. I recommend that you arrive 10 minutes early to your first appointment so that you can fill out your initial paperwork before your appointment is scheduled to start.
Why do I need to fill out paperwork?
Osteopaths need to keep an up-to-date, detailed record of your health and medical history as a patient to ensure that they understand your current state of health and can provide you with relevant advice and treatment options.
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
If you know that your won't be dressed in the appropriate or comfortable clothing for the areas you need treated, it's a good idea to bring along the right clothing to get changed into. For example, if you'll be in a skirt, try packing a pair of loose shorts if you know you need your leg treated. Also bring along any X-rays, test results or image login details that are relevant to your treatment.
What should I wear for my appointment?
Always dress comfortably, you need to be able to relax and feel comfortable for treatment. A comfy top, loose pants or shorts are a good place to start. If you know you won't be dressed in what you need or are still unsure about what area you'll need treated that's ok, I have clean, modest patient gowns here.
Will I need to remove my clothing?
If you cannot remove certain clothing items for spiritual, religious or personal reasons please let me know before your appointment so we can discuss whether it will impact your treatment. It may not impact treatment at all if the area of your body that requires treatment is not what it covers. If it does there may be techniques that we can use that will still be of benefit to you. You will never be asked to undress past your underwear and in any circumstance where underwear is recommended a gown will be provided to wear over the top and towels will be used to maintain modesty.
How long will my appointment take?
Initial osteopathic appointments are allocated up to 60minutes to allow for a detailed history and assessment. Return osteopathic appointments may take up to 45minutes depending on the treatment required.
How much will my appointment cost?
All prices can be found on the Home Page under the header Pricing.
How many appointments will I need to have?
This will be discussed for you specifically as a part of developing your treatment plan. It depends on a few interrelated factors including your condition, occupation, compliance with prescribed exercises and lifestyle advice, and your general state of health. In general most people start to experience a change in symptoms after 1 or 2 treatments. Chronic or long-standing conditions tend to require more time and treatment.
When do you refer for investigations or treatment?
After revising your health history and/or completing a standard physical examination, it may be determined by your osteopath that you would benefit from referral for imaging such as X-ray and ultrasound or other investigations. In these cases, you may be referred or recommended to another health professional such as your GP.
Do I need a GP referral to see an osteopath?
No you don't need a referral from your doctor to see an osteopath. You can book an appointment directly.
Do you accept DVA or WorkCover cases?
At this point in time I am unable to provide treatment under the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) or for WorkCover cases as I haven't set up the required systems. I'm also not taking on Chronic Disease Management(CDM) Plans (previously known as EPC plans) yet but hope to have everything set up for them in 2022. Thank you for your patience.
Do you treat children or infants?
Within my own experience and education I can assess and treat children older than 10 years and I really enjoy working with teenagers. For children under 10 years old and infants I recommend seeing an Osteopath who specialises in their treatment. Go online and check out Jonathan Evans and the team at ION Osteopaths in Nerang.
